The quality of the fruit comes from the mature, deeper roots accessing underground aquifers in the dry-farmed, hot weather district of Calistoga. Old Vines ripen earlier, so there is less chance of scorch due to excessive heat or mildew from fall rains. Now releasing our 25th vintage with grapes primarily sourced from the Frediani Vineyard, Saddleback is happy to list once again: Old Vine Zinfandel.
Challenges in 2017 included a lower yield, so the addition of 5% Petit Sirah is new in this vintage, adding even more depth of flavor. As an expression of the Zin varietal, on the nose find aromas of black cherry, violets, cedar and cracked black pepper. On the palate, the full body gives way to blackberry compote, dark chocolate, caraway, pecan, with a black and white pepper finish.
Get it while you can. Nils's popular Cabernet Sauvignon blend, sourced from our own Oakville District of Napa Valley. Named in honor of our best winery pooch, Chloe, who happily greets our guests. Great to drink now - 2023.
2016: 425 Cases Made
Currently in wide release! Rare Napa Valley-grown Sangiovese is a light to medium-bodied stunner and a local favorite, growing right around the corner from Saddleback's Oakville estate. Aromas of cherries, pomegranate on the palate balanced by black olive and espresso, and a seriously creamy finish. Complements all varieties of picnic fare, lush Italian red sauces and warming temps.
"Douce noir," or "sweet black" is the Italian name for this varietal and that moniker is quite apt! A gorgeous sanguine in color, this cult classic is quite masculine in its body, with an abundance of anise and black cherry in its broad palate. Sourced from the warmer Napa Valley climes of Calistoga, Charbono is nicely paired with charred meats, which stands to reason why Argentinians are the other notable country to grow it.
A dark purple in the glass with aromas of black tea and ripe currant. On the palate, bright and juicy, evoking the bursts of flavor found in peak-season cherries. Balanced tannins and a medium body lead to a cool, silky, long finish. This is an immensely approachable and food-friendly red wine. Pair with steaks, lamb, herb-crusted roasts and roasted vegetables.
Only 79 cases made. Nils Venge's Reserve Cabernet is an iconic must-have from Napa Valley. Made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, barreled 24 months in 100% French oak, and held in bottle for another 24 to rest before release. This is a rare and rewarding vintage, complementary to dining and friendly to the palate with smooth, balanced dark berry flavors. Phenomenal finish.
A straight-up stunner! "Classic Nils Venge Cabernet Sauvignon ... 92 Pts" -- Robert Parker Jr, Wine Advocate
93 PTS -- SF International Wine Competition (Gold Medal)
Our flagship wine, this vintage features a fruit-forward nose, a bold structure and a dense, full body. Lots to excite the palate here. Very typical of the 2013 vintage from Napa Valley, this wine is settling into its "drink now" phase, and will be quite palatable for years to come.
