1994 Scout's Honor

Scout's Honor is a dark, brilliant ruby red. I smell red licorice, black pepper, black raspberry jam, vanilla, with a hint of saddle leather. With a medium body the balanced acid carries this wine into a long finish. This is a very good wine with rich, ripe flavors. The Zinfandel (75%) and Sangiovese (25%) both come through in the blend. The Zinfandel gives the ripe berry flavors, while the Sangiovese comes through with strong earth tones. The oak is pleasant but does not overwhelm the purity of the fruit.

This homage to Nils's long-time companion and trusty hunting dog 'Scout' is made from 75% Zinfandel and 25% Sangiovese. Dark and saturated purple color with an intense nose of spice, clove and blackberry jam. Full, broad and very dense with layers of spicy fruit and toasty, smoky oak. This is a very meaty wine with plenty of grip and full tannins that will develop substantially over the next 3-5 years...

Scout's Honor Wine Information

Scout's Honor began as a blend of two very popular varietals: Zinfandel and Sangiovese. It was comprised of a three-barrel lot of excellent, rich Zinfandel which became available from a neighbor in Oakville who didn't have the time to mess with a such a small amount of wine, and another friend of Saddleback's who had to move and couldn't take her barrel of flavorful Sangiovese made from her own grapes with her to her new home. So flow the tides of fortune! These two well-made, small batches were "artfully" blended by Nils at Saddleback to become the 1994 Scout's Honor.

The response of friends to this ultra-small production wine have been overwhelming. Although initially Nils had intended it as a one-time release, there has been so much positive response to this rich blend of Sangiovese and Zinfandel that he has decided to make Scout's Honor on an annual basis to be released in the Fall of each year. Scout's Honor is no longer always a Zin and Sangio blend.

Note: This wine is produced and bottled by Venge Vineyards. This is the only Venge family wine that Nils Venge continues to sell at Saddleback.
