2016 Grenache, Frediani Vineyard, Napa Valley
a rich and ripe single-vineyard Grenache
Another hot-weather loving grape varietal, Grenache, is well planted in Europe for blending (Cote du Rhone), in Spain as Garnacha; yet once again, our New World Napa Valley climate coaxes additional layers of flavor and texure to this Old World favorite. Coming out of Calistoga, this Grenache saw 18 months in primarily neutral oak, and was lightly blended with Cabernet and Syrah. The result is a medium-to-dense bodied wine, with notes of sandalwood and cherry blossoms on the nose. Ripe pomegranate and plum grace the rich mid-palate, enlivened by an unusually vibrant acid and supple tannin structure. In its youth, a 15-30 minute decant will improve fruit in the glass.
Pair with: Roast duck or duck fat French fries, grilled lamb lollipops, smoked meats or game, prosciutto-wrapped Mission figs, dry Jack cheese, Camembert.
